The Most Common Cancer Known to Women is Breast Cancer
Categorized: Cancer | No comments
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and signs of breast cancer are usually a change in consistency of the breast tissue or lumps found in the breast. A positive diagnosis can be made by having a mammogram. A woman should have regular checkups as well as mammography screening at least once a year which will help to prevent breast cancer.
Breast cancer can also occur in males although this is not as common as it is in females. Early breast cancer does not always present with symptoms and during the more advanced stages the signs of breast cancer will manifest as a lump or thickening under the arm or near the breast and the breast may change shape or increase in size as well as puckering of the breast skin. The nipple may become inverted or one may experience a clear or bloody discharge from the nipple. If one presents with any these signs you should immediately see your health care provider.
If the doctor should find any abnormality on a patient’s mammogram the subject will be sent for further testing such as an ultrasound. An ultrasound is a device that sends out sound waves and will detect any lumps present. If a lump is detected the patient will then need to have a biopsy whereby tissue if removed from that area and will immediately be analyzed which is known as a frozen section to define whether the tissue is malignant or benign.
Other tests such as an MRI, bone scans, CT scans or fine needle biopsy and skin biopsies can also be performed depending on the doctor’s findings. Some doctors prefer to do an excisional biopsy whereby they remove the entire lump or the entire area. There are different types of breast cancer such as ductal carcinomas which is the most common type and lobular carcinomas.
Once the patient has proved positive for breast cancer and the tumor is malignant, breast cancer treatments will commence immediately. Treatment varies from patient to patient such as hormone therapy, radiation therapy, removal of one or both breasts, chemotherapy and targeted therapy.
If there are signs of breast cancer there is a strong possibility that it may have spread to other areas of the body. One can prevent breast cancer by having yearly checkups as well as checking the breasts for any lumps yourself weekly.
